AI is here! It has already created a world of possibilities, both negative and positive, for people in the creative and storytelling space. At Authentic Video we have identified 5 ways to use AI to add value to our services, increase efficiencies in production and reduce overall costs for clients.
1. UPSCALING
Powerful AI tools, such as Topaz Gigapixel and Video Enhance, enable us to upscale images and video by up to 600% with minimal loss in quality. What this means is that old photos and footage that we use in documentaries can be easily refreshed. Images we may not have been able to use in the past are now possible to restore. Poor quality video footage can be turned into 8k resolution. Amazing slo-motion video can be produced from low frame rates.
2. TRANSCRIPTION
In the past, one of the greatest chores for a documentary filmmaker was to review all the footage and transcribe it, before proceeding with a paper edit. Now programs like Descript provide a powerful transcription and video editing tool that uses AI to generate transcriptions and captions for interviews and narrative content.
3. AUDIO OPTIMISATION
Most documentary filmmakers will tell you that good audio is crucial to any documentary film. AI has gifted sound editors the ability to clean up audio, remove background noise and repair audio. This is a game changer, especially when using older audio recordings as part of historical documentaries. Auphonic is our preferred tool and is perfect for voiceover-heavy documentaries.
4. SCRIPT EDITING
While ChatGPT can’t fully replace human writers, it is a valuable tool for editing transcripts and providing easy templates for documentary interviews and shotlists. It can also help with voiceover scripts, generating captions and creating text fo other titling and subtitling tasks to do with making video.
5. VOICE OVER
Once an arduous task conducted in post-production, voiceovers are now much easier and cost-effective to produce. AI-driven tools, such as Descript's overdub, allows producers to generate voiceovers in peoples' own voices (or a synthetic voice that's highly customisable). There are also libraries of voices to select from if needing a particular characteristic to deliver the narration.
6. VIDEO EDITING
AI-powered editing tools can analyze raw footage, automatically select the best shots, and even create rough cuts. For example, AI can detect the most visually engaging clips, choose the best camera angles, and apply transitions without human intervention. This saves time and effort for editors, especially in projects with a lot of footage.
Where we draw the line for AI.
The temptation in real storytelling is to use AI to fill in content gaps in the footage, which often happens in documentary filmmaking. AI is getting so smart now it can easily produce fake footage. At Authentic Video this represents our thin red line for using AI. It is one thing to upscale or clean-up poor quality footage and audio, but we believe it is unethical to use totally contrived content by an AI to tell a story about a real person, place or thing. We also believe that at some level of audience experience using fake video content actually hurts the power of the real storytelling in the long run. If we dupe too many people, too often, audiences will cease to trust what they see and what they hear from documentary filmmakers. Hence, at Authentic Video, we guarantee that all of the footage we use in our videos ultimately comes from a real source to begin with.
